Murdoch Family Reunion
March 1998
Hobart Tasmania
176 years of family history in Australia
Most of the visitors left on Sunday evening all having
felt that the Reunion was a great success and well worth attending.
However, some hardy souls stayed on, and on the Monday about 30 family
members went on a bus tour to visit historical properties associated
with the Dunbabin family. The visitors were firstly treated to an
excellent morning tea and inspection of Marchweil Historical Homestead
at Bream Creek. They then visited the family cemetery adjacent to
Blackman's Bay and saw displays of the educational environmental
awareness programs being conducted at Bangor south of Dunalley, The tour
then went to the far eastern extremity of Bangor, where the bus was
parked and the visitors walked a kilometre or so through bush to visit
Tasman's Memorial,
This memorial marks the place were one of Abel
Tasman's crew swam ashore and first planted the Dutch flag, the first
known visit by a European to Australia soil. After looking at the
memorial the party walked to a clearing were rough-hewn tables had been
constructed under a bush shelter. Much to their surprise the tables were
dressed with colourful clothes, plates and cutlery and a wonderful BBQ
lunch and lots of Tasmanian wines was ready for the walkers. It was a
delightfully warm day, and sitting down to famous Dunbabin hospitality
with a great family, was a great way to unwind and end a wonderful
weekend. A weekend made very memorable by all the wonderful people who
attended. I felt sorry for those who had elected to miss this great
reunion. To all the people who helped I raise my glass, ...oh no did
someone say we had to go, someone has a plane to catch, damn my dreamy
thoughts are suddenly jerked back to the realities of life and our needs
to return to our homes and our jobs and to the work that needs to
continue to be done to prosper this great family.
Postscript: Just prior to the reunion a lot
of descendants of Dr. James's son JAMES were located in Queensland. This
group came together for a BBQ in Toowoomba in October 1998 to meet each
other and to learn more of the other branches of the family, hitherto
unknown to them. A picture taken of people attending that gathering is on
the back page of this booklet.
