Leslie MURDOCH commenced as a bookkeeper
overseer with his uncle William Murray at Windsor Park at age 16 on 16 March
1881 .The business involved the manufacture of soap, candles and cider. On
the death of his uncle he took over the business. He moved to Murrayfield on
his marriage in 1891.The production of candles and soap ceased about 1900
but he continued with cider and the orchard side of the business. He also
raised pigs.
In 1902 he took over the job of Secretary of
the Royal Agricultural Society a task which he continued until 1943.
He was also a member of the Glenorchy Water
Trust, Glenorchy Fruit Board, Kensington Road Trust, Sth. Tasmanian
Chrysanthemum Society, Horticultural Society and a Glenorchy Councillor.
Lived at Murrayfield Tolosa St Glenorchy Refer Obit Mercury 9 Jan 1948 and
Cyclopedia of Tasmania.

Hobart, buried: 25-Feb-1898, Queenborough Cemetery. In 1850 became partner
with brother-in-law William Murray in Murray and Murdoch grocers of 123
Liverpool St Hobart. Married at Windsor Park witnesses William Patterson and
Maria Salmon (Mary's sister). The marriage was conducted by Rev, William
Nicolson. William was a deacon of Chalmers Church for many years. On the
death of Mary the children went to live with their uncle William Murray at
Windsor Park and Aunt Murray (Annabella Murdoch). In 1893 transferred
business to his son William Murray Murdoch who traded as WM Murdoch & Son.

Mary Ann was the second daughter of Thomas (Jnr) and Mary Salmon and was
brought up in Hobart Town and lived with her grandparents Thomas and
Elizabeth Salmon in Bathurst St. Died of contusion of the brain.

428,429. Arrived in Hobart Town from Leith with his wife and his two eldest
sons in the Castle Forbes on 1-March-1822 leaving his two daughters with his
mother He received a grant of 800ac. which he called Craigow. He collapsed
and died in Macquarie St Hobart reports of which are in the Guardian and the
Courier of 26 April 1848. he was living at the time at 116 Bathurst St See
notes on Grace Beveridge. On arrival in Hobart Town set up a midwifery
practice in Liverpool St and then in Macquarie St. See Gazette 20th April
1822

1795, d. 9-Oct-1841, Craigow Richmond, buried: Craigow Richmond. Memorial
removed from Queenborough to Cambridge Church 1953 reads:-" Sacred to the
memory of Grace wife of James Murdoch departed this life 8th October 1841
aged 43 years also James Murdoch Esq. MD departed this life 23rd April 1848
aged 66 years" Dr James Murdoch FRCP (Edin.) with his wife and son John
arrived in Hobart Town from Scotland 1st March 1822" Only daughter of Jas.
Beveridge and Antonia Hardie of Easter Ballado Kinrosshire Scotland.

John MURDOCH m. Mary ROBERTSON, b.
15-Nov-1763, Orwell Kinrosshire Scotland. Research by Hazel Weir indicates
that John must have died prior to 1841, and his wife was still living in
1850. Research also indicates that John purchased Craigow from John
Robertson in 1803, it also indicates that his father was John possibly the
John Murdoch buried at Orwell cemetery.
Mary ROBERTSON b. 15-Nov-1763, Orwell
Kinrosshire Scotland. Research by Hazel Weir indicates Mary's father was
possibly James Robertson of Nether Craigow and her mother was Grizell Grieve
2nd Wife of James, born 15 Nov 1763 and had a sister Isabell born 5 Dec
1765, both baptised by Mr. Mair. James first wife was Isabell and they had
11 children. Mary was still living in 1850.
